Training Sites

Residents in our program learn to care for a diversity of patient populations through various health systems, including Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, UCLA, and community health centers.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC)

A large county hospital and academic training center, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center offers residents a unique opportunity to train in community psychiatry. Residents rotate at OVMC for several months on each of the following services: emergency psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, inpatient consultation & liaison psychiatry, HIV clinic, and women’s health. The inpatient electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) service launched in the 2024-2025 year, and welcomes residents seeking this educational experience. Residents also take call at OVMC and have the opportunity to moonlight there.

Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA (UCLA-NPH)

The Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital is a 74-bed acute psychiatric hospital and is one of the leading centers in the world for comprehensive psychiatric care, research, and education. Residents spend several months at this university hospital, rotating on the inpatient psychiatric unit during PGY-1 and the child and adolescent consultation & liaison service during the PGY-2 year. There are also elective opportunities for residents during their PGY-3 and PGY-4 years.

San Fernando Mental Health Clinic (SFMHC)

San Fernando Valley Mental Health Center is a large longitudinal outpatient health center and the site of resident outpatient clinics beginning in PGY-2. Residents provide comprehensive mental health services to local patients of all ages, regardless of ability to pay. The clinic offers specialized mental health services for homeless patients and youth populations. Residents also gain exposure to the management of clozapine and the use of LAIs (long-acting injectable anti-psychotics) in the outpatient setting. This is also the setting in which residents can gain experience in the esketamine (Spravato)
clinic.

Olive View Mental Health Clinic (OVMHC)

This 10,000-square-foot single-story facility is on the same campus as the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center and provides mental health services and follow-up care for patients and their family members. Patients who are self-referred or referred by their providers are typically experiencing acute emotional crises and may also suffer from co-occurring (mental health and substance use) disorders. The goal of the center is to provide support and interventions for individuals to ensure their ability to thrive in their families, schools, and communities. Some of the strengths of this center are women’s health, psychotherapy, the treatment of psychosis, and the treatment of adult ADHD.

West Valley Mental Health Clinic (WVMHC)

West Valley Mental Health Center is an outpatient ambulatory care mental health clinics that provides our residents with an opportunity to do comprehensive neuropsychiatric evaluation and follow-up with geriatric patients in our community. It is part of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health Centers.

San Fernando Child and Family Center (SFCFC) and Child and Family Guidance Center (CFGC)

SFCFC and CFGC are outpatient ambulatory care community mental health clinics that provide care to families with children who have significant emotional problems requiring comprehensive mental health interventions. They serve as the locations for our Outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry rotations.

Homeless Outreach & Mobile Engagement (HOME)

This clinic is also part of the LA County Department of Mental Health and serves as the base for residents who are engaged in our Street Psychiatry rotation. Residents who choose the Street Psychiatry elective go out into the field and care for unhoused patients on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles.
