Medical Students
Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is a core clinical training site for medical students at the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA.
DGSOM students rotate and learn here on their core clerkships in psychiatry, internal medicine, neurology, emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology. The elective course catalog for fourth-year DGSOM students also includes electives that span across medical specialties.
UCLA medical students interested in psychiatry: Fourth-year UCLA medical students can choose to complete a psychiatry elective on a service with our program’s faculty and residents by enrolling in the Emergency Psychiatry and/or Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry courses in the DGSOM course catalog (course numbers PS320.03 and PS250.10) as part of their fourth-year schedules. DGSOM medical students who may be interested in our residency program are encouraged to complete one of these electives.
Non-UCLA medical students interested in visiting for an away rotation in psychiatry: Applications for visiting fourth-year medical student sub-internship rotations are handled directly through the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA’s Office for Visiting Students, using the VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunity) program. Please review requirements for each rotation as specified on UCLA’s website: https://medschool.ucla.edu/current-visiting-students
Please note that though our faculty and residents are always glad to contribute to the education of the students on our clinical services, our residency program has no involvement in the process of reviewing or accepting visiting fourth-year medical students for sub-internships or elective rotations.
We are also very mindful that not every student is able to access the considerable financial resources (for travel, housing, etc.) that are needed for a visiting rotation (as compared to rotating at one’s home institution), and understand that because of this, a visiting rotation experience is not within feasible reach for all students who might have interest. As such, simply being signed up as a visiting student for an away rotation does not affect invitations to interview for our training program.
Emergency Psychiatry (PS320.03)
The Olive View-UCLA Medical Center Psychiatric Emergency Room (PER) provides evaluation, stabilization, and treatment for acutely psychiatrically ill adult and pediatric patients who come from the largest catchment area in Los Angeles County. Students in this course will provide direct clinical care for patients while working under the direct supervision of teaching faculty.
Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (PS250.10)
The consultation-liaison psychiatry service at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center provides inpatient psychiatric evaluations to the medical, surgical, pediatric, and OB/GYN departments. The scope of services includes psychiatric diagnostic evaluations using a biopsychosocial approach, management of agitation and behavioral problems, treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis, capacity evaluations, and assistance to primary medical teams applying for probate conservatorship.
