Training Overview

We emphasize an integrated clinical training model that stresses a balance of genetic, physiologic, developmental, and psychosocial factors in the making of the overall personality and illness. Our goal is to train psychiatrists who thrive in a variety of settings and are comfortable utilizing an array of somatic, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions within an ever-advancing field. We expect our graduates to be prepared for a choice of various careers in teaching, research, administration, and/or clinical practice.

Residents gain experience and training in comprehensive psychiatric services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. There is ample opportunity to follow patients longitudinally and to maintain follow-up care in the local community. The training program is also structured to allow maximal elective time so that each resident may supplement training in general psychiatry with individual interests in subspecialty areas, including research, psychotherapy, biological, and community psychiatry. The individual resident’s personality and experiences are combined with a firm clinical grounding throughout the training years.
